At 21 years old, on April 15, 1760, Antonio joined the novitiate at the convent of St. Bonaventure, in the village of Macacu in Rio de Janeiro. On April 16, 1761 made the solemn profession and oath, according to the use of the Franciscans, to engage in the defense of the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady, and accepted doctrine advocated by the Franciscan order. A year after profession, Friar Antonio was admitted to priestly ordination on July 11, 1762, in Rio de Janeiro.
